Screening of The Great Gatsby (1974) at American Center
The Literary Society of Loreto College, Kolkata, in collaboration with the Postgraduate Department of English, Loreto College, and the American Center, Kolkata, hosted a film screening of The Great Gatsby (1974) on December 11, 2025 at the American Center. Students and personnel from across institutions in the city attended the programme to commemorate the centenary of the literary classic.
The event began with a brief address and introduction to Fitzgerald's novel and its cultural significance by Samidha Redkar, Public Affairs Officer, American Center. The film, directed by Jack Clayton, and starring Mia Farrow and Robert Redford, offered viewers a rich insight into the cultural milieu of the Jazz Age, and the thematic tension surrounding the perception of the American Dream. The screening was followed by a brief interactive session conducted by Dr. Subhasree Basu, who addressed questions relating to the key elements of the film, and its relationship with the text.
The discussion successfully explored the connection between literature and cinema, and served as an enriching academic and cultural experience.
