Loreto College Library

The mission of the Loreto College Library is to support the teaching, learning and research activities of the College community. It also envisions to enable the development of empowered women through self-learning. The Library is dedicated to providing user centric service through individualized guidance and information literacy to students and faculty regarding appropriate use of print materials as well as e-resources throughout the year, in addition to orientation for freshers. The Library strives for continuous development through strengthening it’s collection of physical as well as e-resources and also modern amenities. The Library is wi-fi enabled, permitting users to avail this facility on their personal laptops and tablets inside the library premises and also provides internet access through 10 terminals. The library is fully automated. It has adopted the KOHA Library Management System (LMS), which is integrated with an RFID system for efficient check-ins, check-outs, and inventory management. Library is spacious and well-lit with seating capacity for 100 users. The open access system ensures the maximum utilization of library collection with complete freedom to access the required resources according to the needs of the user.

With its dynamic resources, inclusive membership, and commitment to intellectual growth, the Loreto College Library continues to serve as a vibrant hub of academic and cultural enrichment. It regularly hosts book displays and sales, showcasing college publications during academic and cultural events. To encourage and stimulate the students, “Best Library User” certificate is awarded to students of each semester every year. To support extension programmes of the College and community enrichment, the Central Library regularly organizes Book Donation Drive, contributing to the growth of school and other college libraries with minimal collection. The Library Society was formed in 2009 to create awareness, as well as interest, and to popularize the use of the Library. The Central library plays an active role in student engagement through various activities organised throughout the year in association with the Library Society.

Our students regularly participate in literary programmes organized by the Prabha Khaitan Foundation and get the opportunity to meet esteemed authors and personalities. Visit to eminent libraries of Kolkata provide our students the opportunity to explore and exploit these knowledge resource centres in different domain in enhancing their lifelong learning capacity. Celebrations of International Mother Language Day reflect the Library’s commitment to promoting the richness and cultural legacy of our varied languages, and how libraries play an extensive role in their sustenance.


Although a part of the collection is as old as the college itself, the library took its shape since the early 1960’s.The library currently comprises the Central Library, Post Graduate and B.Ed. Library, and departmental seminar libraries. Departments of English, Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology as well as Bengali, Hindi, Journalism, Human Rights, Mathematics, and Sociology have seminar libraries.

The Central Library holds material covering a wide range of subjects, larger part of which is in English. The library holdings mainly cover the disciplines of Social Sciences, and Humanities. Subjects covered include English literature and language, History, Geography, Education, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Journalism, Film Studies, Human Rights, Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Applications. Also, there are old and interesting collections of Biography, Philosophy, Religion and Art. There is an extensive collection of Bengali and Hindi language and literature and translation works of regional Indian languages.

The Central Library fosters learning and research through it’s extensive collection of over 54,800 books in the Central Library, alongside 32 print journals, 601 CDs and DVDs, 245 e-books, 1458 text books in the Book Bank; 111 books in the Special Collection; e-resources (6000+ ejournals and 97000+ ebooks) from NLIST-INFLIBNET and 6 newspapers.

There are 15595 books in the B.Ed section and 300 books in the Post Graduation section along with respective journals catering to the varied needs of the Post graduation departments. Post Graduation section is comparatively new. Students of B.Ed and Post Graduation departments avail facilities from both libraries.

The Central Library has received many grants over the years from Central Government, State Government and individual enterprises which has helped in the development of collection of books, e-books and also infrastructure. The Library has immensely benefitted from grants which include UGC-CPE grant, UGC XIIth Plan, Incentive scheme, RUSA, and P.C. Chandra Gyandhara Prakalpo.

  • The Central library is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and till 3.00 p.m. on Saturday. B.Ed. and P.G. Library is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • All users are requested to respect the peace and quiet of the library. In case of any misdemeanor, the librarians are authorized to evict the person.
  • All bags and personal belongings will be deposited outside the library.
  • Eatables and drinks are not allowed inside the library.
  • Users are requested to note that they are allowed to take inside only one exercise book and a pen for making notes.
  • Users are requested not to leave their valuables outside.
  • The Library reserves the right to search any personal item and does not accept liability for loss or damage of these items.
  • Every member must sign the register available at the entrance and give biometric attendance.
  • Students have to bear the Identity Card for entering the Library.
  • One bar-coded library card will be issued to each student.
  • All users have to produce their library cards at the time of borrowing documents.
  • A student may borrow 3 books at a time including day issue for photocopying. Post-Graduation students may borrow 4 books.
  • Students may borrow subject reference books and fiction for 7 days. Subject reference books may not be renewed. Fiction may be renewed for another 7 days.
  • Books borrowed should not be identical.
  • Books are issued from the Central Library on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 12.30 and 4.00 pm. Books may be returned on all days between 9.00 a.m. and 12.30 p.m.
  • One book may be borrowed for photocopying between 9.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m., to be returned on the same day before 2.30 p.m.
  • In case of delay in return of books an overdue fine of Rs.5.00 per working day will be charged.
  • CDs and DVDs may be borrowed on Friday between 10.00 a.m. and 12.30 p.m., to be returned on Monday by 12.30 p.m. A fine of Rs.10/- will be charged per day beyond the due date.
  • Books from Press and Press (Special) are meant for reference only and not to be issued.
  • Newspapers and Magazines must be read only in the library and should not be taken out.
  • A book, once issued, should not be brought inside, unless it is to be returned.
  • Personal books, magazines and printed materials are not to be brought inside the library.
  • Library cards are not transferable. If anyone is found using another’s library card, she will be debarred from using the library.
  • Each student will be responsible for books borrowed in her library card.
  • Books borrowed from LORETO COLLEGE LIBRARY should not be passed on to any outsiders.
  • All books must be checked for damage/mutilation before borrowing. Any damage found should be reported to the librarians immediately.
  • In case of loss or damage of documents the price of the lost/damaged document + overdue fine, if any will be charged.
  • Any student found to have hidden a book or mutilated a book, would be debarred from the library.
  • All books (Reference & Fiction) must be returned and dues cleared before University Examinations.
  • Loss of library cards must be reported immediately.
  • A duplicate card will be issued on payment of Rs.50.00.
  • P.G. students may borrow books from the Central Library between 12.30 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. (Monday to Friday).
