Department of History: Field Visit to Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata
On 21st August, 2025, students from Semester 1 Major , Department of History, Loreto College Kolkata visited the Victoria Memorial Hall for an exhibition on 'Past in Print : India's Freedom Struggle'. The exhibition was an initiative by students from five schools in the city ( Akshar, Daffodils High School, Future Hope, Sir Syed Ahmed High School) to celebrate India's 79th Independence Day.
It marked the evolution of print culture in India. It explored print making's role in shaping narratives of resistance, identity and dissent through a rich collection of rare books, newspapers, journals, pamphlets, lithographs and advertisements from collections of VMH and DAG ( Delhi Art Gallery).
The visit to was an enriching experience. For students of History, an in-depth understanding of India's freedom struggle is of paramount importance. The exhibition greatly contributed towards their knowledge of the contribution of our freedom fighters such as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Khudiram Bose, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das and others in the movement for India's Independence. It enabled us to visualize and contextualize the struggle for freedom beyond text books. The visit made History more tangible and engaging for them and helped them to delve deep into critical reflection on historical narratives.
