International Lecture by Professor Anna Becker



The Departments of English and History, Loreto College, Kolkata, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organized an International Lecture on 12th November 2025. The session, titled "Dangerous Dispatches: Maria Dorothea Ziegenbalg's Letters from Tranquebar", was delivered by Professor Anna Becker from Aarhus University, Denmark.

The event was held In the College Auditorium from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and was attended by undergraduate semester V English and History Major students, along with postgraduate English students.

Professor Becker, who serves as Professor of History of Ideas in the School of Culture and Society at Aarhus University, specializes in the History of Political Theory in Premodern Europe. Her lecture explored the intellectual and historical dimensions of Maria Dorothea Ziegenbalg's letters from Tranquebar, offering insight into early modern women’s writing, colonial encounters, and cross-cultural exchanges.

The session provided students with a nuanced understanding of how personal correspondence can illuminate broader socio-political contexts of the colonial period. Professor Becker's engaging presentation and scholarly perspective encouraged participants to reflect on the intersections between gender, history, and literature.

The lecture concluded with an interactive discussion, where students posed thoughtful questions that enriched the overall academic exchange. The event exemplified Loreto College's ongoing commitment to fostering international academic collaboration and interdisciplinary learning.
