Chat with a Diplomat: Session on Communication and Public Speaking



A workshop titled "Chat with a Diplomat" was organized on September 11, 2025 (Thursday), from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the American Center, Kolkata, by the U.S. Consulate General, Kolkata, for students from various colleges across the city.

The students of Loreto College, Kolkata had the privilege of participating in this enriching session. The event was attended by students from different departments of the College. Representing the Department of Political Science, the following students took part: Rajnandani Singha Roy, Aqsa Zainab, and Kahkashan Tabassum (Semester 1), Ayushi Oraon (Semester 3), and Suhabi Sen (Semester 5).

The session was delivered by Ms. Elizabeth Lee, Director of the American Center and Public Affairs Officer, U.S. Consulate General, Kolkata, on the theme of clear communication, presentation skills, public speaking, and effective communication strategies for global platforms.

Ms. Lee emphasized the importance of clarity, confidence, and precision in speech and expression. Drawing on practical examples, she highlighted how effective communication enhances both academic and professional growth. She conducted six interactive exercises, including written and speaking activities, focusing on:

  • Interpersonal communication

  • Addressing a crowd with confidence

  • Effective use of audio tools

  • Structuring and preparing speeches

  • Adapting presentations for diverse audiences


  • Students also engaged in group activities and discussions with peers from other institutions, thereby broadening their perspectives.

    The session proved to be highly interactive and insightful, offering participants practical tips to improve their communication skills. It also encouraged students to recognize the significance of structuring their thoughts concisely, building leadership qualities, and preparing themselves for opportunities on global platforms.

    Overall, the workshop was a valuable learning experience that provided students with essential tools for effective communication and public speaking, reinforcing the importance of these skills in academic, professional, and international contexts.
