Session on Research and Innovation at Loreto College
On Wednesday, 10th September 2025, Team Criterion 9 (NAAC), in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and the Research & Development Cell of Loreto College, organised a special session on Research and Innovation for faculty members of the college. The event was held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Media Lab.
The session featured Professor Abhijit Chanda, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Jadavpur University, as the distinguished resource person. The programme began with the felicitation of Professor Chanda, followed by an introduction outlining the session's objectives-highlighting the importance of effective research practices and fostering a culture of innovation within academia.
In his address, Professor Chanda shared several best practices aimed at strengthening institutional research environments. He encouraged the use of historical and geographical resources as tools for research and highlighted the critical role of academic databases in ensuring accuracy and depth.
Professor Chanda also urged faculty to connect academic research with real-world application by encouraging student internships with local government and administrative bodies. He emphasized quality in research through metrics like citations, h-index, and peer review, encouraging scholars to pursue impactful contributions.
A key highlight of the session was his focus on the need to move beyond a documentation-centric approach and foster an engaging, dynamic campus environment that motivates students to participate actively in academic life. He also referenced the Radhakrishnan Committee Report as a vital resource for understanding and adapting to current trends in higher education.
The session concluded with an interactive discussion, where participants explored ways to implement the suggested strategies within the college context. Professor Chanda's insights provided clear, actionable guidance to enhance research practices and promote innovation.
