Anti-Ragging orientation for the first-year students
In alignment with the University of Calcutta and the UGC mandate, the Anti-Ragging Committee of Loreto College held an orientation for the first-year, Semester 1 undergraduate students on the 8th of September, 2025, to spread awareness about ragging and its consequences and to make the Semester 1 students familiar with the Anti-Ragging Committee of the institution and its commitment towards the policy against ragging.
The orientation commenced with a short skit performed by the Dramatics Society, which sought to depict subtle bullying/ragging in the form of taunting and name-calling that belittles people, and how, usually, the victim endures the ragging, mistaking it to be ‘hard love.’ Through the skit, it was established that the Anti-Ragging Committee is always approachable and available for the students, and takes stern actions against the offenders who disrupt the peaceful and healthy relations among the students in the college, whilst ensuring that the privacy of the matter is maintained.
The skit ended with the recitation of a short poem:
"In the name of fun,
They laugh and taunt,
Unaware how,
Many nights it could haunt,
But,
Silence only deepens the pain,
Hurting more when you refrain.
Your voice is the only cure,
Alone you need not endure."
Thereafter, student representatives of the Anti-Ragging Committee were introduced to the freshers, ensuring that the first-years knew whom they could approach in case of any difficulty. Subsequently, the faculty advisors of the committee were also introduced, underlining the strong support system available within the college.
The orientation proceeded with a formal and clear explanation of what constitutes ragging as underlined by the UGC. They were assured that they shall be heard at all times and that they must not hesitate to reach out to the committee if they feel they are being subjected to any of the mentioned forms of ragging.
The Faculty Advisors guided the students on how they can reach out in such cases, emphasizing the serious repercussions of engaging in ragging, including disciplinary actions, in line with UGC regulations.
Additionally, students were guided through the process of filing the mandatory UGC Anti-Ragging Undertaking online, as an important step in reinforcing collective responsibility towards maintaining a ragging-free campus environment.
The orientation concluded successfully, familiarising the Semester 1 students with ragging, its complaint procedure, and the constant support from the Anti-Ragging Committee of Loreto College.
