Alumna Talk with Dr. Devika Chirimar



On 25th July, 2025, the Department of Economics, Loreto College, Kolkata department organised alumna interaction event for the present batch of students, titled, Alumna Talk with Dr. Devika Chirimar, a distinguished alumna of the department to celebrate the spirit of connecting with past and finding way for future. A Ph.D. in Economics from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C, USA, Dr. Chirimar specializes in Applied Microeconomics and Environmental Economics. The program was held in the college auditorium onwards 1.30 p.m.

The programme began with a short introduction of the speaker by Ashmita Mukherjee, a secondary student of the department, followed by warm felicitation of the speaker by Amrita Goswami, a first-year student of the department. Tuning up the session with 'Asymmetric Information and Loreto Advantages', Dr. Chirimar stressed on the need for smart planning along with unwavering passion for the subject in finding effective pathways towards all-round development of a student and further shared her valued experiences with the Department of Economics and Loreto college, in term of opportunities she received and harnessed for nurturing her academic and career growth she achieved so far. She also mentioned about the importance of exposure and visibility in building the foundation for a fruitful career of a student, along with prioritizing the participation of students in co-curricular and extra-curricular events how being involved in college in the need of their personality development, besides strengthening scholastic foundation. Moreover, she emphasised on learning various kinds of cutting-edge programming language and coding, as a crucial need for achieving professional success in industry, as well as academia, in the time offing

Dr. Devika, being a wonderful orator, aced at making the session interactive. Students from across the semesters asked her questions related to academia, colleges abroad, data science and internship opportunities. She answered to each of them whilst adding her own experiences and wisdom to the suggestions. The session was interactive, thoroughly engaging and relatable, as the students got to hear and imbibe from someone who had once been on the other side, which eventually would become a guiding become in the future course of their journey. The programme ended with a formal vote of thanks conveyed by Arushi Bajpai, a second-year student of the department.
