From Script to Screen: Developing Ideas into Visual Mode

On 14th January 2025, the Film Studies Department of Loreto College organized a one day workshop on filmmaking for the IDC and Minor students of Film Studies. The workshop was conducted by Mrs. Sarmistha Dutta Roy. It delved into various aspects of the craft including editing, budgeting and documentary style of filmmaking.

There was an interactive brainstorming session with the expert; the students talked about the different aspects which constitute the making of a film while Mrs. Roy shared her valuable experience about dealing with the same. She especially focused on budgeting and its importance. The finances backing a film can change the output drastically and she gave essential advice about how to make a low budget film that strikes a chord with the audience. She also informed the students about the different ways in which they can pitch a film to producers.

One of the most enriching parts of the workshop was the practical session Mrs. Roy conducted to give the students a taste of shooting. She guided a few volunteers in handling a camera so that they could shoot a short clip in the classroom. Interestingly, she made the volunteers shoot the clip in two ways- one clip maintained continuity while the other did not. This example demonstrated to the students how important continuity in editing was for filmmaking as a whole.

Mrs. Roy also showed the award-winning documentary she had directed. The documentary dealt with fashion seen on the streets of Kolkata. She talked about how different documentary style filmmaking was from traditional filmmaking and how the former was a very effective medium nonetheless. She shared her first hand experience of shooting in the city as well.

This one day workshop was extremely informative and left the students with a clear knowledge about the basics of shooting and directing a film. The students enjoyed discussing filmmaking in such vivid detail and their knowledge about the subject was enriched.
