The Heritage Walk
Loreto College organized a captivating Heritage Walk for the Heritage Course on 26th February, 2025. The Heritage Walk was conducted under the guidance of Miss Sangita Geol and Dr. Suparna Bhattacharya and focused on re-visiting the beautiful lanes of Chitpur in North Kolkata. The Heritage Walk embarked on a journey through time, unveiling the layers of history and the culture preserved within the lanes of Chitpur and North Kolkata altogether.
The Heritage Walk unveiled the beauty of some of the remarkable historical places like that of Chitpur's Chunnam Galli, renamed Chunna Gali during British rule which is a street rich in history. The Badan Chand Roy Bari, a well-known family home, hosts a famous Durga Puja. Its establishment date is debated, and its architecture mixes European styles with a traditional Bengali "chala" roof temple. It boasts a legacy of over 150 years. Haji Allauddin Sweets, a 102-year-old shop, originally sold batasha and later introduced popular North Indian sweets like mawa laddoos and gulab jamuns, made with pure ghee. Haji Khuda Buksh Nabi Buksh, is a long-standing perfume (Attar) shop. The Nakhoda Masjid, the largest mosque in Bengal, could hold around 10,000 worshippers. The history of Gauhar Jaan, Salim Manzil and her contribution to the history of gramophone recording and many more historical places, which hold unbound culture, heritage and past glory.
The insightful knowledge elucidated by Sangita Goel, highlighted cultural tapestry architecture, and its significance. The Heritage Walk captivated our student's imagination and fostered their deeper understanding of the lanes of Kolkata and ensured an educational and enriching experience.
