Special Session on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (2025)

On the occasion of the UN-designated International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Loreto College held an awareness session on June 26, 2025. The event kicked off at 11:00 a.m. with the arrival of our esteemed chief guest, Dr. Amarnath Mallik, who was joined by officers from the Shakespeare Sarani Police Station. The NSS Vice President and Treasurer warmly introduced and felicitated Dr. Mallik.

During his speech, Dr. Mallik discussed various types of drugs, making a clear distinction between legal and illegal drug use, and emphasized the need for proper regulation of medicinal drugs. He shared his preference for the term "Drug Abuse" instead of "addiction" to help lessen the stigma attached to it. He also broke down the root causes of Drug Abuse using the acronym D.R.U.G.S.-Depression, Recreation, Unstable personality, Genetic factors, and Social customs or taboos. Noting the alarming trend among students, particularly in medical and engineering colleges, he encouraged young people to open up about their feelings and seek support from caring adults. The session wrapped up at 12:30 p.m. with an engaging Q&A segment, followed by a heartfelt vote of thanks.

Through this initiative by NSS, the unit aims to raise awareness among young women, highlight the psychological and social factors behind Drug Abuse, and empower students with the knowledge and support they need to make informed, healthy choices and contribute to a drug-free community.
