Department of English Colonial City Tour
On May 12, 2025, the Semester 6 students of the department of English, Loreto College visited the Manicktala Jain Temple complex, St. John's Church and Eden Gardens to gain an appreciation of the vibrant history and cultural tapestry of the city of Kolkata. From exploring the contribution of the diasporic Jain community to critically viewing the iconic Black Hole Tragedy memorial site and Job Charnock's mausoleum, and exploring Sir Auckland's Gardens where the colonial rulers would promenade, the students gained a deeper understanding of the diverse cultural influences that have shaped a colonial city like Kolkata. The tour promoted interdisciplinary learning by linking literary studies with historical, architectural, and sociological perspectives. Five faculty members accompanied the students on this trip.
