Writing Workshop on Personal Essay and Narratives

On 16th April, 2025, the final year students of the undergraduate and post-graduate batches of the Department of English, Loreto College participated in an intensive two-hour workshop on personal essays and narratives conducted by Dr. Liesl Schwabe, a Fulbright-Nehru Scholar (2024 -25) and coordinator of writing across the curriculum, Berkshire Community College, U.S.A.

Dr. Schwabe explained what personal writing entailed with special emphasis on the 'I' persona, the context in which the author is writing and the persona's actions and significance as reflected in the narrative. During the course of the workshop, Dr. Schwabe gave prompts to the students asking them to employ the clauses to write about their own experiences, with an emphasis on the space-time continuum and the psychological state felt at that moment as well as in retrospect. Thus, the students had first-hand experience in penning personal essays. Personal essays and narratives are often required in applications for fellowships and admissions to universities. The workshop was particularly significant because it foregrounded some of the important pointers for personal essay and statements.
