On June 5, 2025, the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) in association with the Department of Environment, Government of West Bengal, commemorated World Environment Day at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, Newtown,Kolkata. In line with the global theme "Beat Plastic Pollution", the event sought to raise awareness and encourage decisive action against the growing menace of plastic waste. The programme brought together policymakers, environmental experts, students, and citizens under the larger vision of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).

The celebration began with registration and a breakfast session, followed by the
inauguration of the WBPCB exhibition stall and visits by dignitaries.The programme officially started with the State Song and an audio-visual presentation on environmental awareness.Dignitaries were then felicitated and welcomed with a symbolic plant-watering ceremony,emphasizing the importance of ecological restoration.

A significant moment in the event was the unveiling of key WBPCB publications, including:

  • The Annual Report 2023–24

  • World Environment Day 2025 theme-based posters

  • Books on air pollution and plastic-related issues.


  • The event featured key speeches and addresses from notable speakers emphasizing collaborative efforts and collective action to protect the environment. Shri Jagadish Prasad Meena, IAS, Member Secretary, WBPCB, highlighted the board's persistent efforts in monitoring environmental quality and the importance of integrating data-driven governance with public participation. Smt. Chandrima Bhattacharya, Hon'ble Minister of State, called for transformative action and inter-departmental collaboration to tackle plastic pollution, lauding WBPCB's awareness campaigns and urging citizens to adopt sustainable lifestyle choices. Roshni Sen, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, emphasized the interconnectedness of environmental conservation with health, economy, and urban resilience, commending educational institutions participating in environmental programs. Prof. Ajoy Kumar Roy, Director of JIS Institute of Advanced Studies & Research, stressed the importance of circular economy models, research-led policy reforms, and developing biodegradable alternatives. Dr. Kalyan Rudra, Chairman, WBPCB, highlighted the alarming levels of plastic contamination in rivers and wetlands, presenting the board's real-time data and surveillance insights, and urging industries to switch to greener packaging solutions.

    As part of the event,Dr. Rudra announced a student-focused competition aimed at promoting responsible plastic waste management across the state, involving schools and colleges in West Bengal, which encourages students to actively participate in collecting and responsibly disposing of plastic waste, with awards presented to exceptional performers, demonstrating the government's commitment to environmental conservation and collective action to protect the environment.

    Post-lunch, the celebration continued with a vibrant and intellectually stimulating Environmental Quiz Competition, centered around themes like Sustainability, Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), Beat plastic pollution etc. Students from various schools and colleges participated with great enthusiasm, answering questions related to plastic pollution, climate change, biodiversity, sustainable practices, and environmental policies. The quiz served not only as a test of knowledge but also as an engaging platform to reinforce eco-conscious values among the younger generation. The energy and awareness displayed by the participants reflected their deep commitment towards the environment . Following this, the much-anticipated award ceremony was held, where winners of the poster-making, eco-art, and quiz competitions were honoured for their creativity, innovation, and awareness initiatives.

    The World Environment Day 2025 celebration organized by WBPCB emerged as a powerful platform for reflection, recognition, and renewed commitment towards environmental sustainability. From thought-provoking speeches by esteemed dignitaries to vibrant student participation and the unveiling of impactful initiatives, the event successfully bridged awareness with action. The focus on the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution" resonated throughout the program, inspiring collective responsibility and solutions at every level-government, institutions, and individuals alike. As the event concluded, it left a lasting impression that environmental protection is not just a duty but a shared journey-one that demands persistent effort, innovation, and unity for a cleaner, greener tomorrow.
