Research in Geography: Understanding the Basics



The Department of Geography, Loreto College, in collaboration with Research Cell organized a Workshop titled Research in Geography: Understanding the Basics.

The resource person was Ms. Shamayita Roy, Department of Geography, Rabindra Bharati University, and the students of Semester II, Department of Geography, Loreto College were the target audience.

The objectives were to help students understand the significance, types of research methodologies, and to provide a structured framework for writing research papers. It also encouraged critical engagement with published research, aiming to cultivate a curiosity-driven approach among students. The session began with an overview of research and its significance in geographical studies, followed by a detailed classification of research based on its purpose, data collection methods, and the nature of information. An interactive component involved students analyzing hard copies of research papers, categorizing them based on the type of research. Ms. Roy introduced an eight-step guide to writing a research paper from scratch, offering a clear and practical approach to academic writing. The session concluded with a Q&A round, where students clarified their doubts and participated in meaningful discussions. The workshop was especially effective in simplifying complex concepts and boosting students' confidence in approaching research. The learning outcome was seen in students who reported greater clarity on research writing and expressed strong motivation to begin their own work. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with high appreciation for the engaging format and Ms. Roy's guidance. In conclusion, the workshop successfully met its objectives, leaving students better equipped and more confident in navigating the world of academic research.
