Commercial Visit to Dakshinapan: A Cultural and Economic Exploration

On 7th May 2025, the Economics Method students of the Department of B.Ed., Loreto College , undertook a commercial visit to the Dakshinapan Shopping Complex as part of their Semester 2 curriculum. Located in South Kolkata at the intersection of Gariahat Road and Dhakuria, opposite the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Dakshinapan is a unique cultural and commercial hub established in 1988 by the West Bengal Government. Envisioned as a centre for handicrafts and handlooms representing various Indian states, it also houses performance venues like Madhusudan Mancha, reinforcing Kolkata's commitment to art and culture. Students explored the open-air complex, taking in its relaxed atmosphere and vibrant stores.

The complex is home to state emporia such as Rajasthali (Rajasthan), Manjusha (West Bengal), Mrignayani (Madhya Pradesh), and Poompuhar (Tamil Nadu), each offering a vivid showcase of regional crafts. From Bandhani and Baluchari saris to terracotta figurines, bronze idols, and tribal art, the students explored the economic relevance of these crafts as expressions of identity and tradition. The emporiums from Gujarat, Assam, Odisha, Bihar, and Kashmir further enriched the experience, presenting a mosaic of India’s artistic diversity. The commercial model of Dakshinapan, driven by heritage-based commerce rather than mass retail, offered students valuable insights into sustainable economic practices.

Beyond the emporia, Dakshinapan features independent stores offering handcrafted jewelry, khadi apparel, Madhubani art, and eco-friendly fashion. Interactions with artisans and entrepreneurs highlighted the socio-economic significance of cultural industries. The visit became an immersive lesson in how cultural heritage can support local economies. It left the students inspired, more aware of India's artisanal richness, and committed to preserving it through education.
