Sandip Ray Unplugged: Heritage, Cinema, and the Future

On 11th May, 2025 the Departments of Film Studies and Journalism & Mass Communication in collaboration with the Central Library of Loreto College and Cine Central, Calcutta organized a special interaction with famous director Mr Sandip Ray at his Bishop Lefroy Road residence. 4 students across the two departments were given the special opportunity to ask the esteemed director some questions and listen to his insight about his work in the industry.

Mr. Ray's residence was once home to his father, the legendary Satyajit Ray, as well. Soaking in the atmosphere of a place that the great filmmaker and storyteller had lived in was an exceptional experience. Mr. Ray graciously indulged in a discussion with the students. Several aspects of cinema were talked about-ranging from his experience as a set photographer on his father's sets, his foray into the industry as a director, to his views about the current cinematic landscape.

The students asked a variety of questions about his career and sought his advice for aspiring filmmakers. Mr. Ray had answers that were truly enlightening, filled with anecdotes about his and his father's illustrious careers as well as astute observations about the process of film making. Prof. Dipanwita Ghosh, Head of the Department of Film Studies, asked Mr. Ray a few questions as well, and the director gave very interesting responses to these questions. Dr Bonny Ghosh, Head of the Department of Library Science and Dr. Soumya Dutta, Head of the Department of Journalism, provided some valuable inputs to the discussion as well.

This was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the students to interact with someone as well-respected and experienced in the industry as Mr. Ray. The immense knowledge shared by him on this day will truly help the students in the future.
