Write It Right Series II: An International Bilingual Interaction on Scriptwriting

Write It Right Series II- a workshop which facilitated international bilingual interaction on scriptwriting was held on May 5, 2025 at the media lab, Loreto College. The event was organised by the Departments of Film Studies, Bengali and Journalism and Mass Communication in collaboration with the IQAC, Loreto College. The workshop was designed to provide students with guidance and information on the principles of scriptwriting, specifically for OTT and television platforms. The session focused on fiction (films, web series, etc.) and non-fiction (broadcast journalism).

The session was inaugurated by Dr Amrita Dasgupta, IQAC co-ordinator, who briefly spoke about the theme of the workshop and the relevance of sessions such as these for students who are upcoming professionals. Mrs. Dipanwita Ghosh, Head of the Film Studies Department, introduced the esteemed resource persons, celebrated film and television director Mr Anindo Banerjee (joining online from Dhaka), noted screenplay writer Ms. Aditi Majumdar and Mr Dibyendu Ghosh, senior print and television journalist.

Mr Banerjee, the first speaker of the session, talked about the difference between literature and scriptwriting. He shared valuable insight about how to write a script while catering to the market demand and touched upon interesting topics like the difference between character-driven and plot-driven narratives. Ms. Majumdar delved deeper into the same themes, specifically focusing on writing for fiction shows on television. She also talked about aspects that are unique to the medium, like the gauging of TRPS and the phenomenon of modifying scripts at intervals to match the audience’s interests. Mr Ghosh discussed the fundamentals of broadcast journalism and gave information about the specific roles of writers, reporters and producers. He also shed light on the methods of crafting a news piece for TV, which included insight on details like duration and the importance of relevant visuals.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the interaction, asking interesting questions to the resource persons. It was an enriching experience for the students, as they got the opportunity to learn the nuances of professional script writing from the masters.
