Eastern European Classical Music Masterclass

The Alliance Française du Bengale organised a masterclass with Dr. Taras Filenko, a Ukrainian pianist and distinguished scholar in the history of music, ethnomusicology and performance. It was held at Loreto College, Kolkata, in the Concert Hall from 11:45 A.M. to 12:45 P.M. on the 21st of March, 2025, for students of Semesters I and VI.

During the session our esteemed guest Dr. Filenko, shared with the students some history of the different eras of music; the Baroque period from the early 17th century onwards, the period of Classical music from 1750 to the early 1800s, and spoke greatly about composers such as Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven who were creators of sonatas and symphonies that are listened to even today.

Dr. Filenko had also talked about how music was influenced by the events taking place around composers and their pieces such as the Turkish invasions, Asian influences in musical compositions and instruments such as the Bandura which is a Ukrainian stringed instrument which were played by musicians called Bandurists who were often blind.

Several pieces of music were played upon the piano by Dr. Filenko, from elegies and emotional pieces to happier and joyous tunes that had every student in awe. Much culture and knowledge were learned in this masterclass by students and teachers. He shared his passion and enthusiasm for music and its history, and also shared with the students a wonderful space for learning new educational and cultural traditions across Eastern European music.
