Constitution Day 2025
Organized by the Department of Political Science in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Political Science Society, National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit, and All India Catholic University Federation (AICUF).
Loreto College celebrated Constitution Day as part of its annual academic event on November 26, 2025. The programme commenced at 11:45 a.m. with a prayer song and hymn presented by students of the AICUF Society, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Dr. Amrita Dasgupta, IQAC Coordinator, along with Student Council President Anuja Prasad and Vice President Atryee Banerjee, marking the formal inauguration of the day's proceedings. Ms. Soumi Pal, College Treasurer, served as the Master of Ceremonies. The inaugural session also featured a vibrant student dance performance celebrating nationalist spirit.
The highlight of the event was a dramatized presentation with audio-visual aid prepared by the Political Science Society, portraying the evolution of the Indian Constitution and the judicial milestones that have shaped India's democratic architecture. Through a combination of narration, performance, and multimedia projection, students presented concise enactments of three landmark Supreme Court cases-Golaknath vs State of Punjab (1967), Kesavananda Bharati vs State of Kerala (1973), and S.R. Bommai vs Union of India (1994). The presentation effectively captured the enduring contestation between parliamentary authority and judicial review, highlighting the emergence of the Basic Structure Doctrine and the constitutional principles that safeguard federalism, secularism, and fundamental rights. The concluding narration underscored the Constitution as a dynamic, living document whose resilience lies in its interpretation and democratic practice.
Following the performance, Dr. Amrita Dasgupta addressed the audience, reflecting on constitutional values and the significance of civic responsibility in contemporary India. The morning session drew to a close with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Prof. Sayoni Choudhuri Patra, Head of the Department of Political Science.
The second half of the programme featured an Inter-College Constitution Day Debate Competition, held at 1:00 p.m. in the college auditorium. Five institutions participated-NSHM, Scottish Church College, Sister Nivedita University, Seth Anandaram Jaipuria College, and the host team from Loreto College. The motion for the debate was:
"The House believes that irrespective of the outcome of the next census and delimitation exercise, the Women's Reservation Bill must be implemented immediately".
The session was moderated by Mr. Aandolan Sarkar and adjudicated by Ms. Anjum Katyal and Mr. Shiladitya Saha. Participants engaged in rigorous, analytical arguments, offering diverse perspectives rooted in democratic principles, gender justice, and constitutional ethics. Scottish Church College won the Best Team Award and also secured the Best Speaker Awards in both categories.
The Constitution Day 2025 celebrations at Loreto College effectively integrated academic engagement with creative expression, inspiring students to reflect on the spirit of the Constitution and its enduring relevance in shaping India's democratic future.
