Department of History- Alumnae Interactive Workshop on Museology

A workshop on "Museology as a Career Option" was held on 6th November 2025 at Loreto College organized by the Department of History in collaboration with the Career Counselling Cell for the Semester I and Semester V History Major students. The resource person for the session was Ms. Roshmi Dey, an alumna of the Department of History, Loreto College and a current student of Museology, who shared valuable insights drawn from her academic and professional experiences in the field.

Ms. Dey began by introducing the concept of Museology. She explained that Museology combines observation and research to understand how museums function as spaces of learning and cultural preservation. She also introduced students to ICOM (International Council of Museums) and its role in setting global standards for museum practice.

The session highlighted the importance of documentation and conservation, emphasizing how these processes ensure the protection and continuity of heritage. Ms. Dey spoke about exhibitions, education, and outreach, noting how museums today go beyond display to engage audiences through interactive and educational experiences.

She outlined various career paths in Museology, including those of curator, conservator, exhibition designer, researcher, education officer, and heritage communicator. The students were particularly interested in the skills the field offers—research and documentation, curation and design thinking, public communication, cultural sensitivity, and storytelling which are all essential for anyone aspiring to work in heritage and culture.

Ms. Dey also guided students on where to study Museology, sharing her own experience and recommending institutions that offer specialized programs. The session included observation and curating activities, giving students a glimpse of practical aspects of museum work.

During the Question & Answer segment, Ms. Dey addressed queries about entrance exams, the advantages and challenges of pursuing Museology, and the academic content of the subject.

The interactive session concluded with a renewed appreciation for the museum profession. Students left with a clearer understanding of Museology as a dynamic and meaningful career path that connects history, art, and community engagement.
