Special Lecture on 'Experiencing Human Rights in Everyday Lives: Perspectives from Environmentally Affected Migrant Workers and Labor Migrant Workers from India'

The Department of Sociology and Human Rights organized a Special Lecture on the theme "Experiencing Human Rights in Everyday Lives: Perspectives from Environmentally Affected Migrant Workers and Labor Migrant Workers from India" on 19th September 2025.

The guest speaker was Ms. Ghurni Bhattacharya, Founder and Managing Director of SocioScopia, an initiative promoting social science research and youth engagement. She is currently pursuing a Double Master's in Sociology from Bielefeld University and the University of Bologna under the Erasmus+ Scholarship, and is also a Human Rights Working Group Member at YOUNGO, the official youth constituency of the UNFCCC.

Ms. Bhattacharya delivered an insightful and engaging talk exploring the intersections of climate change, migration, and human rights. She discussed how environmental degradation and displacement impact the lives and rights of migrant and labor communities, with particular focus on India and Southeast Asia. The session highlighted the socio-economic challenges, policy gaps, and lived experiences of environmentally affected and labor migrant workers.

The lecture was highly interactive, with students actively participating and sharing their views on migration justice, sustainable adaptation, and the social dimensions of environmental change. The discussion encouraged critical reflection on the everyday experiences of human rights and their relevance in contemporary society. The event witnessed the participation of around 100 students from Semester III and V of Human Rights and Semester III of Sociology. The session proved to be both informative and thought-provoking, providing students with deeper insights into real-world human rights concerns.
