Abanindranath Tagore: The Artist as Storyteller

The concluding lecture of the "Literature and the Other Arts" Value-Added Programme, organised by the Department of English, Loreto College, was delivered by Prof. Tapati Guha-Thakurta on May 30, 2025. In her talk, entitled "Abanindranath Tagore: The Artist as Storyteller," Prof. Guha-Thakurta highlighted the multiple dimensions of Abanindranath's artistic career, focusing on how his work as an illustrative painter constantly involved both verbal and visual narration. By situating his work within a broader cultural and historical context, the lecture offered a nuanced understanding of Abanindranath Tagore's dual role as painter and master raconteur.

The lecture was followed by a field visit to the Indian Museum under Prof. Guha-Thakurta's guidance. The visit provided an opportunity for the participants to view several works by Abanindranath Tagore and his contemporaries at close quarters, thereby reinforcing and expanding upon the ideas shared during the lecture. This direct engagement with the artworks made the concluding session of the course both intellectually enriching and memorable, bringing the study of literature and the other arts to a fitting close.
