Women Equality Day 2025: Community outreach program at a village in Paschim Barisha by students of PG English

The students of the PG Department of English, Semester 3, at Loreto College, Kolkata, organised a community outreach program at a village in Paschim Barisha on August 30, 2025. The village is one of the many adopted by Loreto College. On the occasion of International Women's Equality Day, Loreto College, in collaboration with Soroptimist International of Calcutta, organised this initiative to strengthen the bond between the college and the village community, to spread smiles across their faces for the upcoming Durga Puja, and also to promote awareness on health and well-being.

The program began with an introductory speech by the spokesperson of Soroptimist International of Calcutta, explaining to the women what women's equality is, the significance of the day, and how the women present there can earn equal rights, or at least take the first step towards it. The girls of the college presented a short program, starting with a short speech, followed by a song, and ending with the recital of a poem named "Tomar Amar Din" written by our very beloved Dr. Sumita Bannerjee. Following this, there was a discussion about a healthy and affordable diet for the village women who are mainly homemakers. This was an extremely informative talk given by Dr. Ruth from Poushtik Life. Then the members of the Soroptimist International of Calcutta handed sarees to women of the village along with food packets, spreading smiles across their faces. We ended with the distribution of certificates and food packets for the students.

The overall visit proved to be a meaningful step towards fostering social responsibility and community engagement among students, while also benefiting the villagers with resources and awareness. This has helped the students to understand their commitment towards the upliftment and holistic development of the adopted villages.
