National Lecture on Indian Knowledge System

A National Lecture on the Indian Knowledge System was organized on 25th August 2025 (Monday) from 11:00 a.m. onwards, at the joint initiative of the Departments of Geography, History, and Political Science in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Loreto College.

The lecture was delivered by Dr. Projit Kumar Palit, Professor Director, Centre for Indological Studies, Department of History, Assam University, Silchar, on the theme "Indian Knowledge Systems". Dr. Palit traced the trajectory of Indian knowledge from the prehistoric period to the classical age. Beginning with archaeological evidence from sites such as Bhimbetka, where cave paintings reflect early human activities including hunting, rituals, and interactions with animals, he demonstrated how these sources reveal the cultural and intellectual depth of ancient India. His presentation, interspersed with relevant images, enabled the audience to engage closely with India's civilizational heritage.

Highlighting the Harappan Civilization as a milestone of early Indian innovation and technical advancement, Dr. Palit further examined the evolution of Indian philosophy and literature. He emphasized the centrality of values such as non-violence, which shaped Indian intellectual traditions and later influenced global leaders. Drawing upon the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Vedic and Upanishadic texts, and various schools of philosophy, Dr. Palit presented a comprehensive overview of the richness and continuity of Indian traditions.

The lecture was attended by faculty members and students of Semesters I and III from the Departments of Geography, History and Political Science. To ensure wider participation, the session was also streamed live through Google Meet for the MoU colleges. The event concluded with an engaging interactive question-and-answer session.

This programme marked the successful launch of a series of initiatives undertaken by the IQAC, Loreto College, under the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which recognizes the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) as a vital component for revitalizing higher education in India.
