From Script to Screen: The Art of Short Film Making
Organized by the Film Studies Department for Minor and IDC Students at Loreto College
Date: 29th July 2025
A highly engaging and educational Photography and Videography Workshop titled 'From Script to Screen: The Art of Short Film Making' was organised by the Film Studies Department on Tuesday, the 29th of July, 2025, at Loreto College, exclusively for the minor and IDC students of Film Studies. The workshop was facilitated by Ms. Ayati Roy, a renowned cinematographer and fashion photographer known for her creative vision and expertise in visual storytelling.
The session began with a comprehensive theoretical introduction to photography, where Ms. Roy covered essential concepts such as the Rule of Thirds, the Exposure Triangle (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO), and the fundamentals of composing a visually compelling image. This was followed by an insightful discussion on videography theory, including the importance of frame rates (frames per second) and how they affect motion, mood, and realism in video production.
Ms. Roy also provided an overview of essential photography and videography equipment, demonstrating the use of tools such as portable lights, triggers, and diffusers. Students were given the opportunity to engage in hands-on practice, allowing them to familiarize themselves with the equipment and apply the theoretical concepts in real time.
A highlight of the workshop was the practical segment, where students were divided into small groups and challenged to write a one-minute script. They were then provided with the college's video camera and asked to shoot their scripts on campus, applying what they had just learned. This exercise not only facilitated their learning of technical skills but also encouraged teamwork, creativity, and time management.
Essentially, the workshop was an enriching experience that bridged classroom theory with practical application, leaving students better prepared for future creative endeavors in photography and film production.
