Department of Education : Workshop on Research Methodology



A workshop on Research Methodology was organised on May 8, 2025 by the Department of Education, Loreto College, Kolkata for the undergraduate students of Education (Major) Semester II to introduce them to the concept of Research. The workshop aimed to provide students with a foundational understanding of research practices, as outlined under the 4-year UG syllabus (CCF)- of Calcutta University, which includes the opportunity to pursue a research degree in the fourth year. The workshop was conducted by Dr. Debika Guha, Associate Professor, Department of Education of Loreto College.

The workshop primarily focused on how to conduct research. Concepts of selection of a problem, hypothesis, review of literature, research design were explained. Dr.Guha introduced the concept and types of sampling to the students. Probability, non-probability sampling, independent, dependent, intervening and confounding variables were explained along with quantitative and qualitative analysis. She discussed the tools and methods of data collection and the importance of careful analysis of data and communication of findings and bibliography. All explanations were followed by examples in the field of education and social science which helped the students to comprehend. The discussion on the systematic steps involved in conducting research and the core components of research methodology helped the students to understand the true meaning of research. The workshop was a participative one and concluded with an interactive question-answer session. Students actively participated by giving examples, raising queries and clarifying their doubts.

The workshop on Research Methodology was a valuable introduction to the world of academic research. It was very informative, structured, engaging, and provided clear, practical guidance on essential research components. It provided a vital opportunity to help students to understand and analyse problems related to education. The session was very successful and equipped students with the foundational knowledge and confidence required to undertake research in future semesters, thereby aligning with the academic goals outlined in the NEP 2020.
