Department of Geography Study Tour: Experiential Learning at Solar Dome Museum

The Department of Geography, Loreto College, organized a Study Tour: Experiential Learning at Solar Dome Museum on April 29, 2025. Seventy-five students and four faculty members from the Department of Geography, Loreto College, visited the India’s first Solar Dome Museum in Kolkata for an educational excursion aimed at promoting experiential learning beyond the classroom.

Learning Objectives

  • Deepen students' understanding of sustainable energy practices and solar technology

  • Reinforce academic learning with practical experience

  • Learning Outcomes
At the end of the session the participants were able to:

  • Engage directly with renewable energy solutions and climate-related topics

  • Think critically about global environmental challenges and the role of geographers in fostering sustainable development

  • Gain hands-on experience, that complemented the objectives of the Resource Geography course, which emphasize on analyzing resource depletion-particularly of forests, water, and fossil fuels—and promotes an understanding of sustainable resource development

  • Effectively address the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7, which advocates for affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for all

  • During the visit, students explored interactive exhibits, installations and simulations that demonstrated key concepts such as the greenhouse effect, climate change, energy conservation, and carbon footprint reduction strategies, reinforcing their academic learning with practical experience. The museum also featured displays on solar architecture, allowing students to appreciate the role of design in sustainable urban planning.

This outcome based learning successfully bridged theoretical knowledge with real-world application, making the learning experience both impactful and memorable.
