Research Cell Presentation on February 5, 2019



On February 5, 2019, Dr Soumya Dutta of the Department of Journalism & Mass Communication made a Research Cell presentation on “Impact of Satellite Television on Audience: A study on Select Towns in West Bengal”. The study was conducted on five district towns of Asansol, Howrah, Bardhaman, Siliguri and Bolpur. To understand the impact of satellite television on audiences in non- metropolitan towns certain research strategies were used primarily based on quantitative mwthods. A sample survey was undertaken comprising of 500 respondents. The respondents were provided with detailed questionnaires. A number of statistical tools were used for data interpretation. Some interesting findings came up regarding the preference for channels among male and female respondents. The impact of satellite channels in driving consumerism, making audience more informative, aiding glocalisation, making them aware about issues like AIDS, polio, dowry ,child marriage, joint family structure, children and helping women to develop their own identity was studied. Some recommendations for satellite channels and government and non government agencies were also presented.
