Department of Geography: Academic Orientation

The Academic Orientation of the Department of Geography was held on November 30, 2023 to officially welcome the first-year students to the department. The Academic Orientation of the department has been a tradition over the last three decades.

The Orientation programme began with the presentation of a short documentary by the third-year students on the learnings of their field trip to Shoghi in the Shimla Rural Tehsil of Himachal Pradesh. Field trips have traditionally been important to geographers and are a distinctive mode of learning. The students presented a comprehensive report of the study area where they were engaged in conducting household and market surveys, prismatic compass survey of the settlement as well as of River Ashwini. The velocity of the river and the depositional characteristics were also calculated. The hard work and meticulous planning involved in the successful execution of the excursion were well reflected. Each student contributed to the careful preparation and presentation of the video. The objectives and methodology involving the pre-field, field, and post-field experiences were addressed and presented through the 30-minute-long documentary, which acted as a source of encouragement and enthusiasm for both the first and second years.

The second-year students organized an Educational Quiz with various types of questions ranging from audio-visual rounds to riddles. The quiz was an informative and entertaining one, with diverse questions for participants as well as the audience. The first years participated with full eagerness. The Orientation ended with the concluding remarks of Dr. Sahai, Head of the Department of Geography.
