Colloquium on Text and Performance



The Departments of English and Bengali of Loreto College, Kolkata, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organised a colloquium on Text and Performance on April 28, 2023. The event began with a number of student paper presentations in English and Bengali. Dayita Samanta (Third Year, English Department) offered a comparative study of Dionysiac rituals and Raslila through the lens of the carnivalesque. Valentina Mondal (Second Year, Political Science Department) discussed the evolution of the structure and style of Rabindranath Tagore’s plays and their relation to Indian folk forms. A group of third-year students of the Department of English traced the origins and evolution of puppetry in the West and in India, following which Shreshtha Paul and Somoshree Palit performed a reimagined enactment of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex in the form of “Jyanto Putul Naach.” The event concluded with a dance demonstration on the theory of Rasa by Ms. Dishari Mukhopadhyay, Guest Lecturer in the Department of Bengali.
