International Webinar by Department of Geography



The Geography Department of Loreto College, Kolkata hosted the first international webinar titled “Whose Lives Matter? Contextualising Racial and Ethnic Discrimination” in association with Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) on August 8, 2020. The speakers were Dr Michele Lobo, Lecturer of Human Geography, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Education, Deakin University, Australia. Our second speaker was Dr Elizabeth Chacko, who is currently an Associate Provost for Special Programs and the Mt. Vernon Campus Academic Experience. She is Professor of Geography and International Affairs, The George Washington University, U.S.A. Dr Homen Thangjam was the last speaker of the day and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science &Human Rights in Indira Gandhi National Tribal University – Regional Campus Manipur. The audience comprised of Undergraduate students, faculty members from the Geography Department of different colleges in India and abroad. The webinar focused on ever-present social maladies over time, space and communities. It sought to keep alive in the hearts and minds of the citizens of this multi-cultural multi-racial world that “human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”(Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948). That every human life matters, never mind the differences and it is of paramount importance to combat racial and ethnic discrimination, intolerance and xenophobia.
