Research Cell Presentation by Dr. Anindita Bandyopadhyay

The Loreto College Research Cell organised a web presentation entitled, “Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi: A Man with a Difference—The Beginning”. The presentation was made by Dr Anindita Bandyopadhyay of the Department of History, Loreto College on 19 September 2020.

Albert Einstein while paying his tribute to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi had once commented, "Generations to come, it may be, will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth." These words were aimed at that person who had symbolised ’India and Indians’ at large. But the history of the emergence of this Gandhi has at its basis the image of a different Gandhi, a Gandhi whom we do not acknowledge much. Dr Bandyopadhyay’s presentation brought into focus this Gandhi — she foregrounded how his stay in London, the vow for vegetarianism and his first novice attempt at writing journalistic articles in ’The Vegetarian’ helped him consolidate certain fundamental ideas and principles that would go on to create the image of the man the general populace has in mind. The presentation was attended by the members of the faculty and the students of History honours of Loreto College. The presentation ended with an engaging interactive session.
