Colloquy: Online Debate Competition by Economics Department

On the 30th of May 2020, the Department of Economics, Loreto College organized an inter-year online debate competition, ‘Colloquy’. The motion for the debate was "Government should resort to deficit monetization to prop up the economy against the backlash of the Covid 19 pandemic." The event was judged by Ms. Devika Chirimar and Ms. Dipanjana Roy and moderated by Mr. Priyam Marik. Each year was represented by one team consisting of two members, one speaking for and the other speaking against the motion. Satakshi Chakraborti from third year was adjudged the best speaker for the motion while Kumkum Mohata of second year became the best speaker against the motion. The title of the best team went to the second year team with Kumkum Mohata and Adrija Poddar as team members. The entire event was an immensely enriching experience for all the students because they were able to use effective rhetoric to analyse the economic impacts and debate the plausible policy implications of the current pandemic with respect to the Indian economy.
