Beyond the Behaviour: Recognizing Autism and ADHD in Students

The Departments of B.Ed. and Postgraduate Psychology at Loreto College jointly organized an insightful session titled "Beyond the Behaviour: Recognizing Autism and ADHD in Students" on 19th March 2025. The session was attended by the first-year students of the PG Psychology Department and the final-year students of the Department of B.Ed.

The esteemed resource person for the session was Mrs. Priyanka Bhoopal (Bhattacharya), whose expertise in the field brought immense value to the discussion. She was introduced by Dr. Jeejeebhoy, Head of the PG Department of Psychology, who warmly welcomed her and set the tone for the session.

Mrs. Bhoopal provided a comprehensive overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), shedding light on how these neurodevelopmental conditions manifest in students. She emphasized the crucial role of teachers in recognizing early signs of these conditions and ensuring that students receive the necessary support by being referred for professional screening.

Beyond ADHD and autism, Mrs. Bhoopal also addressed other learning disabilities that may often go unnoticed in a classroom setting. She highlighted the fine line between typical childhood mischief and neurodevelopmental disorders, a distinction that is essential for educators to understand. Her explanations were enriched with real-life examples, making the session both engaging and informative.

A visually stimulating PowerPoint presentation further enhanced the discussion, providing clarity on complex concepts. Through this, Mrs. Bhoopal effectively deepened the participants' understanding of how neurodevelopmental disorders affect learning and behaviour.

The session was an enriching and thought-provoking experience for students of both departments. It expanded their knowledge and instilled a greater sense of responsibility in future educators and psychologists. The insights gained will undoubtedly aid them in creating more inclusive and supportive learning environments.
