Economics Department



The Department was founded in 1927, it started offering Honours in Economics from 2012 and since then it has traversed a very successful journey with its students and faculty members. Working on the objective of imparting quality knowledge in Economics, the department has been able to facilitate the nurturing of interest in higher studies and academic research. The academic performance of the department has been quite promising as reflected in the high proportion of students securing first class in the University Examinations every year.The Department also has been able to clock a good record in terms of the students getting admitted to premier institutions for further studies and achieving corporate placements in various prestigious companies, after the completion of graduation.

An annual journal ‘Reflections’ is published in which both students and faculty members contribute well- researched articles. Students participate in different inter college fests , state and national level seminars organised by the department and other institutions . Students get a basic insight into the nature of the development of Indian Economy and World Economy .

An annual Students’ meet - Ecolore has been organised by the department since 2014. This meet includes events like paper presentation, debate, essay-writing and poster-making.The theme selected for Ecolore every year is based on contemporary issues in Indian Economy which enables students to critically analyse and use their economic intuitions to logically reason and put forward their arguments. The department is planning to host an international seminar in the near future. The department also plans to publish a book with an ISBN number comprising of students’ term papers. Training students in various softwares like SPSS, Statistica, E-Views to help students in research work is in the pipeline.

Dr. Rupa Ghosh

Qualifications: M.Sc., B.Ed., M.Ed. NET, Ph.D.

Rupa Ghosh is working in the post of Assistant Professor in the department of Economics at Loreto College Kolkata. She is also a Teacher Educator in the B. ED. wing of the College. She studied at Dinabandhu Andrews College Calcutta, Shri Shikshayatan College (B. ED) Calcutta, and the University of Calcutta. She has been awarded her Ph.D. degree in the year 2020. She has previously served various other undergraduate and B.ED.Colleges in Kolkata as Guest Faculty and College whole time post. She has immense interest in Social Work as well. Her research interests and publications are in the areas of teacher education, academic involvement, and aspirations, social work, entrepreneurship and women’s empowerment.

Dr. Mrs. Suranjana Mitra

Qualifications: M.Sc., B.Ed., Ph.D

She has completed her post graduation from University of Calcutta and received her doctoral degree from Jadavpur University. Her area of research is microfinance. She has also completed her B.Ed from University of Calcutta. Her specialization is monetary economics. Her area of interest is macroeconomics. She teaches macroeconomics and public finance. She has presented papers in national and international seminars and has national and international publications. She has also received ‘Best Paper’ award at an international conference. She has edited a conference proceedings titled ‘Public Policies for Inclusive Development’. She is currently the head of the department of economics.
   

Mr. Mainak Bhattacharjee

Qualifications: B.Sc. (CU), M.A.(JU), M.Phil.(JU)

He is serving as Assistant Professor. He has obtained B.Sc in Economics from University of Calcutta in 2014, M.A. in Economics from Jadavpur University in 2016 and M.Phil. in Economics, therefrom, in 2019. He has written books on Introductory Microeconomics and Introductory Macroeconomics for undergraduate level and has a good number of research articles published in national and international journals to his credit. His areas of specialization are International Economics, Game Theory, Econometrics and Macroeconomics. His research area is Macroeconomics of NPA in banking sector

Mr. Nilavo Roy

Qualifications: M.Sc.

Nilavo Roy is an Assistant Professor in the Dept. Of Economics, Loreto College.He has received merit certificate from CBSE for outstanding performance in AISSE 2011. He has completed his post graduation in Economics from University of Calcutta.His areas of specialization are International Economics, Labour Economics and Advanced Econometrics. He had taught Microeconomics, Mathematical Economics and Statistics for Economics in various colleges of repute. His research works on Indian informal sector has been published in reputed regional journals of economics and newsletters.He was awarded ’Vivek Samman’ (2012) for his contribution towards social welfare.
