The Department of History, Loreto College is one of the oldest departments of this celebrated institution. The Department’s approach towards the discipline is very comprehensive with intensive and extensive emphasis on facts, historiography and analysis of India and the world. The Department is attuned to the changing needs of education and pedagogy and gives utmost importance to active learning in the form of discussions, presentations, seminars, talks by eminent professionals and academics.
Courses offered by the Department comprise the Four-Year B.A. /B.Sc. (Honours with or without Research) Degree Course and Three-Year B.A. / B.SC. Multidisciplinary Course, Under CCF 2022, affiliated to the University of Calcutta.
Enhancing the research skills of the students and encouraging them to engage with issues of the past and their links to the present forms an important focus for the Department. Programmes on Research Methodology are organised regularly. The pedagogy of the department includes lectures, group and individual assignments, tutorials, extensive use of audio-visual aids, debates and panel discussions. Academic excursions and field visits are undertaken outside college hours to help engage the students with the curriculum in the material realm. Regular student evaluations are made on the basis of class and home assignments, tutorials, project work, quizzes as well as college and university examinations.
The Department has been organising an annual student-driven inter-collegiate academic event Historia since 2017. This comprises a keynote address by an eminent academician, student paper presentations followed by a debate on a selected theme. Regular alumnae engagement takes place in the form of interactive sessions and talks. The Department also offers a Value-Added Course on Heritage sensitising the students towards the need to sustain and preserve our tangible and intangible heritage. Such multifarious activities contribute to making the Department dynamic.
