Department Profile

Vision and Mission of the Department of Film Studies:

Vision:

  • In harmony with our Founder Mary Ward's values of justice, freedom, sincerity, truth, and joy - the Department of Film Studies envisions forming critically aware, creatively empowered, and socially responsible women who use cinema as a medium to interpret, question, and transform the world

  • We aspire to cultivate filmmakers, scholars and citizens who combine knowledge, artistic imagination, and ethical responsibility in their pursuit of excellence

  • Mission:

  • To nurture informed, confident, and creative voices in cinema through a balanced emphasis on theory, history, and practice

  • To cultivate a spirit of critical inquiry into cinema's role in shaping culture, identity, and society, fostering conscience and compassion in students

  • To empower women to engage with cinema as storytellers, researchers, and visionaries who can respond meaningfully to the needs of the contemporary world

  • To provide equal access to creative opportunities, encouraging collaborative learning and innovation in film production, criticism, and research

  • To inspire students to see film not only as an academic discipline or career path, but also as a medium of truth, justice, and joy in service of society

  • Film Studies as a subject has immense potential as it is a perfect embodiment of representation of all the art forms through a combination of theory and practice. It not only enhances the inherent creativity of students but also helps to shape their perspective. With the correct implementation of their knowledge, they can use this most powerful visual medium as a tool to convey and fulfill their social and cultural commitments.
The students are making successful careers in the various fields of print and digital media working as film critics,, news reporters, anchors and researchers. Some students are pursuing their higher studies while some are engaged in research oriented activities in films.

In Loreto College – Film Studies can be taken as an elective pass subject as GE course for 2 semesters under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) or as an elective subject under the 2-Year degree course paper. The course curriculum covers history of films, theories on films and different techniques used in films - so that at the end of each semester the students can make their own short films and projects.
    Objectives:
    • To present the subject to the students in a simplified way so that they can discover the subject and find it interesting.
    • To encourage and enhance their power of observation and understanding of the subject and generate enthusiasm and love for film, not only as a means of entertainment but also as an art form and thus generate a critical and intelligent viewership.
    • To make the students aware of various world cinema and Indian cinema movements through a comparative study
    • To give the students basic technical knowledge of film making with practical hands-on experiences so that they have a clear view of every phase of film making and be industry-ready
    • The department organizes regular workshops and seminars and encourages students to present research papers and also to take part in various seminars and competitions organized by other colleges and institutes to give them much needed exposure
