 Loreto College, Kolkata, was established in 1912 by the Religious of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (I.B.V.M.). The order was founded by MARY WARD (1585-1645), a dynamic English Catholic lady, in an age when Catholics were persecuted in England. Europe was torn by religious dissension and women’s rights were generally ignored. A determined visionary, she managed, with the help of some devoted companions, to set up schools for young women.

Founded in 1912, Loreto College is a women’s college affiliated to Calcutta University. It is the first college in West Bengal to have been assessed by the prestigious National Assessment and Accreditation Council of the U.G.C. and awarded the highest rating of five stars in 2000. The B.Ed. Department, founded in 1913, is recognized by the N.C.T.E. and was awarded a B+ grade by N.A.A.C. in 2003. Currently, there are approximately 800 students in the College.
